Miller named associate editor of mechanical design journal

7/18/2018

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Scarlett Miller, associate professor of engineering design and industrial engineering, has been named associate editor of the Journal of Mechanical Design (JMD), an American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ (ASME) publication.

As a journal serving the broad design community, JMD highlights scholarly research across all aspects of engineering design.

In her role as an associate editor, Miller will aid in the peer review process of journal submissions, work with reviewers to maintain consistent contributions and support for the journal, make material recommendations to the JMD’s editor, ensure timeliness of the review process and maintain active lines of communication with journal contributors and reviews.

“I am excited to be able to help drive the direction of the design, theory, and methodology and engineering education research communities,” Miller said. “This position also allows me to help better connect with my peers across the globe.”

At Penn State, Miller is the director of the Brite (Bridging Research in Innovation, Technology and Engineering) Lab, where she focuses her research efforts on ergonomic product design, design cognition and human-computer interaction. She is the recipient of multiple National Science Foundation (NSF) grants, including a prestigious Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award, NSF funding for a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) and a research grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Miller’s nomination was approved by ASME’s Publications Committee and Design Engineering Division in June 2018. She will serve a three-year term, beginning on August 15, 2018. In addition, she will serve as guest editor for the Special Issue: Selected Papers from the International Design Engineering Technical Conference 2018, starting summer 2018.

Founded in 1880, ASME is a nonprofit, membership-based organization that supports collaboration, knowledge sharing, career development and advancement and skill enhancement across all engineering disciplines.
