UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Rico Polim, a senior who is completing B.S. and M.S. degrees in industrial engineering and operations research simultaneously, was honored as one of five students presented with the 2016 John W. Oswald Award at the Penn State Student Awards Recognition Ceremony on April 3 at Eisenhower Auditorium.

The Oswald Award is presented annually to graduating seniors who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in their area of study. A native of Pontianak, Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia and a Schreyer Honors Scholar, Polim is minoring in mathematics and Six Sigma and carries a cumulative GPA of 3.96.

Polim was part of the Penn State Formula SAE team from 2012 through 2015. The team designs Formula-style racecars and represents Penn State at international competitions. Polim has also been involved in the Laboratory for Intelligent Systems and Analytics (LISA) within the Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering since 2014.

“[Through LISA] I am given the privilege to learn anything I want with the best group of researchers in the field,” Polim said.

After graduation Polim is interested in obtaining a job in a variety of fields such as: data analytics, supply chain or automotive engineering. He is also contemplating furthering his education through a doctorate program.

“I am humbled to receive such a prestigious award,” said Polim. “The support from family, friends and the people in LISA and Formula SAE have been nothing but tremendous. I wouldn't be receiving this award without their support and for that, I am grateful.”

The John W. Oswald Award, established in 1983, annually recognizes graduating seniors who have provided outstanding leadership in at least one of several areas of activity at the University. The award consists of a medallion honoring John W. Oswald, president of the University from 1970 to 1983.
