Professor honored with prestigious engineering design award

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Professor Gül E. Kremer has been named the recipient of the 2016 Kos Ishii-Toshiba Award for her outstanding contributions to engineering design.
Kremer’s leadership, dedication to research and passion for teaching engineering design were a few of the factors that led to her receiving this prestigious award.
Presented annually by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Design Engineering Division, the award recognizes a nominee’s “sustained and meritorious contributions to design for manufacturing and the life cycle.”
In addition to her role as a professor of engineering design and industrial engineering, Kremer has worked as a program officer in the Division of Undergraduate Education at the National Science Foundation since 2013.
Her research interests include applied decision analysis to improve complex products and systems and engineering education. She has three books and more than 280 refereed publications to her name.
Kremer served as a Fulbright Scholar at the Dublin Institute of Technology in Ireland from 2010-11 and was a National Research Council-US AFRL Summer Faculty Fellow in the Human Effectiveness Directorate from 2002 to 2004.
She currently serves on the editorial boards of the following publications: Journal of Mechanical Design, Advances in Engineering Education, International Journal of Precision Engineering and Manufacturing and Journal of Industrial and Production Engineering.
Kremer is an ASME Fellow and a senior member of the Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineers.
She holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in industrial engineering from the Yildiz Technical University (Istanbul, Turkey), an MBA from Istanbul University and a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri-Rolla.
After 16 years at Penn State, Kremer recently announced she will be leaving Happy Valley this summer to assume the position of C.G. “Turk” & Joyce A. Therkildsen Department Chair in Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering at Iowa State University.
The ASME award is named after the late Kos Ishii, a professor of mechanical engineering at Stanford University, who died in 2009. Ishii was well known and highly respected by his students and peers for teaching manufacturing design. Before going into academia, Ishii worked at Toshiba and maintained a lifelong partnership with the company throughout his academic endeavors.
