UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Ellen Fagan and Nichole Stoner, both industrial engineering students, have been honored by the Penn State Women in Engineering Program (WEP) for their outstanding commitment and achievements within the college and the community.
Fagan, a senior in industrial engineering and Spanish from Prospect Park, Pa., was named the recipient of the Joelle Award for Women in Engineering Leadership, which recognizes an undergraduate woman that displays an outstanding record of leadership and service contributions that positively affects the climate for women in engineering.
Fagan has been actively involved in WEP leadership roles throughout her time at Penn State, serving as a rover, mentor, and professional development assistant and she has been a physics academic facilitator for two years. She also participates in the Engineering Ambassadors, the Society of Women Engineers, THON, and the Engineering Orientation Network.
Fagan completed an internship with Rockwell Automation in summer 2013 and she will serve as a sales engineer intern for the company this summer. She also spent semesters abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Valparaiso, Chile to help master her Spanish fluency.
“Ellen works as hard at being an upstanding leader and individual in the community as she does at being a successful engineering student,” said Paul Lynch, a lecturer in the Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering. “She possesses the passion and selflessness to give back and share her knowledge and successes in order to help others thrive both within the College of Engineering and beyond.”
“We are all very proud of Ellen,” added Lynch. “I have no doubt that she will go on to make a significant positive impact in her community as she progresses in her career. Ellen embodies everything for which Penn State stands and I cannot think of a more deserving student for this honor.”
Established in 2002, the Joelle Award is endowed by Dr. Edward and Jane Liszka in honor of Jane Liszka’s parents, Joseph and Eleanor Munafo.
Stoner, a junior from State College, Pa., who is minoring in French and Francophone studies, was named a recipient of a WEP Outstanding Facilitator Award.
She was honored for her efforts as the academic facilitator for calculus I and II study groups where she has gone above and beyond in her efforts to strengthen the understanding of course concepts while encouraging problem-solving techniques amongst her peers.
Sponsored by Shell Oil Company, WEP-facilitated study groups consist of first-and second-year women with an upper-level engineering facilitator who has demonstrated academic excellence in that course. The groups meet weekly to review homework, discuss concepts, and prepare for exams.
Stoner has accepted an industrial engineering professional internship with GE Transportation this summer and is expected to graduate in May 2016.
Fagan and Stoner were formally presented with their awards at the Engineering Diversity Dean’s Advisory Board Banquet on March 2 at the Nittany Lion Inn.
