Student Spotlight: Rico Polim
7/10/2015
Status: Senior Schreyer Scholar pursuing his bachelor's and master's degrees in industrial engineering simultaneously
Hometown: Pontianak, Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia
Projected Graduation Date: May 2016
Thesis adviser: Soundar Kumara
Recent Awards: Polim was awarded the 2014-2015 E. Wayne Kay Graduate Scholarship by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers Education Foundation. The $4,000 fellowship supports full-time students enrolled in a graduate program for manufacturing engineering or industrial engineering in the United States or Canada.
He was also presented with a research grant worth $1,100 by the Schreyer Honors College for documenting his seven-month internship at Case New Holland (CNH) Industrial.
Current Internship: CNH Industrial is a global company that designs, produces, and sells agricultural and construction equipment, trucks, commercial vehicles, buses, and specialty vehicles, and offers a broad portfolio of powertrain applications.
In his position as a visibility and procurement analyst, Polim predicts how long it will take for a shipment to reach its destination while factoring in such variables as congestion, adverse weather, limited information, and data quality.
"In this internship, I am combining the principles of data analytics and supply chain engineering—both key concepts in industrial engineering—to solve the issues surrounding the logistics of delivering CNH equipment to and/or from its different entities," said Polim.
Other: Polim served as team co-captain of Penn State's 2015 Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) student design team, which placed 33rd at the SAE international competition held May 13-16 at Michigan International Speedway. More than 120 teams from around the world competed in the event that showcases the automotive engineering skills of the student teams.
