IE students awarded Material Handling Education Foundation scholarships

4/29/2015

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Carolyn Duffett and Ellen Graszl, undergraduate industrial engineering students at Penn State, were recently awarded scholarships by the Material Handling Education Foundation, Inc. (MHEFI) for the 2015-16 academic year.

Duffett, who is a Schreyer Honors Scholar, received the Spanco, Inc. Honor Scholarship in the amount of $5,000.

Paul Lynch, lecturer in the Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, said Duffett is an outstanding student who has firsthand experience in material handling and logistics.

“Carolyn was an Inbound Operations Engineering intern last summer for Federal Express where she helped to create and implement a Microsoft SharePoint website for inbound operations,” he said. “She also assisted in the development of standards for home package deliveries in order to increase the efficiency of Fed-Ex material handling stations. She is an excellent choice for this scholarship.”

Graszl won the Material Handling Equipment Distributors Association Honor Scholarship, also valued at $5,000.

“Ellen is an enthusiastic student who strives for academic excellence in her classes,” said Andris Freivalds, professor in the Marcus department and Graszl's adviser. “She is more than deserving of this award by the Material Handling Education Foundation.”

Forty MHEFI scholarships were issued for the 2015-16 academic term totaling $127,150.

Established in 1976, the MHEFI is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the study of material handling, logistics and the supply chain. Since then, the organization has awarded more than $2.5 million in scholarships and grants to students at colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.
